Some consider Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) to be the smartest man that has ever grown up in what is now the United States. Yet it is not his mental capacity that is remembered among many, but rather God’s glory in his life, as he was transformed by God from a lover of self to a lover of Him. In this letter to his daughter, 3 familiar characteristics of Edwards stuck out to me: 1) an eternal mindedness, 2) an awareness of the brevity of this life, and 3) a resolved focus on the Lord. When these characteristics are then joined to a father’s love for his daughter, the result is a letter that we can all be edified by.
